Rite of Passage

Rite of Passage

Last Thursday (May 24, 2007), I underwent a grilling experience in quest of academic pursuit. I had my public presentation of my paper, “Assessing Reading Motivation of Selected college Students in a Literature Classroom. Speaking before a group of professionals composed of Ateneo Faculty Members and graduate students from my home department (English) can really be very nerve breaking. I never imagined I would be able to stand to face Ateneo’s esteemed and distinguished icons.

My presentation, just like the time allotment given to other presenters, lasted for 20 minutes followed by questions from the audience. I was too overwhelmed by anxiety and fear especially the question and answer segment. Good thing, my comic antics naturally came out in the process of answering the questions which really eased the tension in the room, and more so, within me. I would like to think that the funny side of me compensated for some details I missed in the discussion.

Before I knew it, my presentation was over. It was a huge relief! I never thought I would survive such a challenge. It was not an easy task. Indeed, it must have been a process I need to go through and I’m glad I endured it!

For someone who has really a high regard for education, this I tell you, getting an MA degree is gazillion times better than securing a US visa or winning millions in a lottery!
